From the Hudson River to Spiral Jetty: Reclaiming Nature through Art

Dia Art Foundation and the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater will collaborate on a two-part program first in the Dia:Beacon galleries, and then aboard the sloop. Both programs will cover much of the same information, with a slightly different focus in each location. It is not necessary to attend both tours.
For Community Free Day, April Lee, Dia:Beacon’s arts education associate, and Maija Niemisto, Clearwater's director of shipboard programs, will co-lead a tour examining unique approaches to environmental activism, with a focus on the work of Clearwater founder Pete Seeger and Dia artists such as Walter De Maria, Joseph Beuys, and Robert Smithson. The program will culminate with an optional visit to Beacon Point, a site-specific artwork by George Trakas.
This program is free with admission to Dia:Beacon. There is limited space and reservations are recommended through the reservations link above.
The second part of the program will be on Saturday, July 28th, from 6 – 9pm. Passengers will board the sloop Clearwater for a sail and program to complement the Dia:Beacon tour. Carrying forward themes introduced in the galleries, the sail will focus on the work of Pete Seeger and the Clearwater organization, and its role in the clean-up and revitalization of the Hudson River. Works by artists in Dia’s collection, including Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, will also be presented, highlighting their important role in environmental conservation. The sail will leave from and return to the Beacon waterfront.

About the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater:
For over 40 years, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater has been at the forefront of the environmental movement as champion of the Hudson River, working to pass landmark legislation like the Clean Water Act, providing innovative educational programs, environmental advocacy, and musical celebrations, including the renowned annual Clearwater Festival, to inspire, educate, and activate millions of people. Founded by music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger, the organization began with the launch of the sloop Clearwater in 1969 —a majestic replica of the sloops that sailed the Hudson in the 18th and 19th centuries. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 106-foot-long sloop is among the first vessels in the U.S. to conduct science-based environmental education aboard a sailing ship, creating the template for environmental education programs around the world. More than half a million young people and hundreds of thousands of adults have experienced their first real look at an estuary’s ecosystem aboard Clearwater. The organization's strong connection to youth, environmental education, and its agenda to create the next generation of environmental leaders, are all part of building and strengthening a Green Cities Initiative for a green economy and a more inclusive and diverse environmental movement. Utilizing the greatest natural resource in the region, the Hudson River, Clearwater has become the grassroots model for producing positive changes to protect our planet.
About the guides:
April Lee, arts education associate at Dia:Beacon, is an education practitioner, researcher, and consultant. She has worked in the curatorial departments of cultural institutions such as the Hammer Museum and the Honolulu Academy of Arts; in contemporary art galleries; and with community-based arts and education organizations in the U.S. and abroad. Her areas of interest include modes of learning, contemporary art practice, and interdisciplinary and globally-themed education. Recently, she completed a master’s degree at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and consulted on the development of a world-class school in Bhutan.
Maija Niemistö is the Director of Shipboard Education with the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. She has served on the crew and education staff with Clearwater for the past 5 years sailing, teaching and living aboard the ship. Maija used her International Relations and Environmental Studies degree from the University of Madison-Wisconsin to explore the human and natural world through the lense of water conservation. With a background in music, teaching and adventure, Maija has enjoyed many opportunities to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds aboard the majestic sloop Clearwater.
